The National Mall refers to the area between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.  The concept of clearing the chaotic space and replacing it with design and function was inspired by the turn-of-the-century "City Beautification Plan" then incorporated into L'enfant's original design from 100 years prior.

Under the "McMillan Commission" in the early 1900's, these American Elms were planted and (to this day) line the two boulevards that parallel each other and frame the large lawn between the Washington Monument and the Capitol.
